Come springtime, come NEO FreeRunner.
Today OpenMoko send out a press release with some exciting news. At CES 2008 they will unveil the Neo FreeRunner.
The successor to the Neo 1973 (GTA01). The Neo FreeRunner, a.k.a NEO 1973 GTA02, will be previewed at the press-only lunch@Piero's technology showcase event.
The big change between the Neo 1973 and Neo FreeRunner will be on the inside. Mostly hardware improvements like a faster processor, 2D/3D graphics, accelerometer and WiFi. On the outside the device will look the same. Also the speakers go from stereo to mono which was a design choice made to get some room inside for the extra components in the FreeRunner. The headphone will still be stereo so it's not a big loss.
Best bit in the press release that OpenMoko also announces that the device will be available at springtime. First for developers and when the software becomes stable for end users. OpenMoko always said that if the Neo 1973 GTA02 (now known as FreeRunner) became available there would be no more hardware changes, so when spring is here and the Neo FreeRunner is available I will probably be buying one. I don't mind having to update the software before it becomes stable for end users.
